In celebration of the Philippine Environment Month, the Environmental Management Bureau – DENR – CAR organized the Padyak Para sa Kalikasan in coordination with the City Government of Baguio on June 27, 2021. The activity consisted of 15 kilometers biking and planting of about 800 plants, Baguio bikers cycled the Center Business District of Baguio City and planted about 800 Pinus Kesiya seedlings which were provided by the Baguio CEPMO – WAMD. Baguio cyclists from the Highland Urban Bicycle Coalition led by Mr. Rhey J. Delmendo, Tourism Operations Officer of the Baguio City Tourism and Special Events Division covered approximately 15 kilometers starting from Lakedrive Burnham Park routing the Central Business District which ended in front of “The Mansion”, Wright Park, Baguio City. Tree Planting Activity thereafter followed after the biking event. Honorable Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong and City Councilor Joel Alangsab were joined by EMB – CAR, Ambient Monitoring Chief Wilhelmina O. Lagunilla during the Tree Planting together with the cycling enthusiasts at the
Padyak Para sa Kalikasan advocates healthier lifestyle, environmental conservation and safe bike ride around the City. Among the benefits of biking include the improvement of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems by preventing various diseases and boosting of immune system especially during the pandemic. Some studies also show that cycling as an alternative could help prevent the transmission of COVID-19 by avoiding public transport and averting unnecessary contact with other people by keeping a safe distance with them. Local cyclists around Baguio have been partnering with the EMB – DENR – CAR prior to the onset of the pandemic. It has been a practice since then during environmental events where structured and dynamic leisure bike rides were included in the activities promoting Clean Air and Clean Environment, among others. Minimum health protocols such as physical distancing, wearing of facemasks and faceshields and frequent disinfection were strictly observed during the said activity.
Pre-registered participants were assisted with the proper procedures for tree planting, took selfies and were given Tee- shirts as tokens during the event.
