In support for the 18-day campaign to end Violence Against Women and their Children, the Environmental Management Bureau-Department of Environment and National Resources -Cordillera Administrative Region conducts a seminar for raising awareness on the Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children of 2004, the Republic Act 11313 or the Safe Spaces Act or “Anti-Bastos Law” of 2019 and other related topics like the Gender Sensitive Language that should be applied at work and in the public places.
The seminar was conducted on November 29, 2022 via Microsoft Teams at the EMB-CAR Office. Atty. Aloi Renz P. Santos, the speaker, explained relevant provisions of R.A. 9262, and R.A. 11313, with concrete VAWC cases and appropriate actions taken to address them. He pointed out that as Filipinos still adhere to a patriarchal society, there is a need to establish VAWC desk to attend to such cases.
The next speaker, Dr. Rolando T. Refuerzo Jr. made clear importance of maintaining good and proper posture in the workplace to help improve productivity and comfort. A VAWC victim who suffered neck pain due to physical abuse can be assisted to overcome psychological and emotional setback brought about by the painful experience.
A similar activity participated in by local barangay officials, was conducted in the Municipality of Kapangan, Benguet. This was facilitated by Ms. Cleofe G. Hadsan. Speakers included MTC Judge Melita Amylesha D. Macaraeg, MENRO Willier L. Bacuso, COMELEC Officer Mabel D. Villaroman, Atty. Pee Jay T. Cuarteros, Engr. Kesha B. Codmos, and Mr. Jerard S. Timbalopez.
In her speech, Judge Macaraeg emphasized on the promotion of Anti-VAWC to help eradicate cases that contribute in clogging the judicial system. On his part, Mr. Bacuso lectured on the basics of RA 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Program. Likewise, COMELEC Officer Ms. Villaroman gave updates on the upcoming Barangay elections.
Atty. Cuarteros shared some videos relative to RA 11313 or the Safe Spaces Act or “Anti-Bastos Law”. He later answered questions from the participants who wanted enlightenment from what they watched in the videos presented.
From the EMB-CAR, Engr. Codmos discussed RA 9272 and 8749 as well as the functions of the office relative to these laws.
In closing, Mr. Jerard Timbalopez gave an overview of the activity by presenting real-life scenarios in today’s society. Open forum followed. //jst//
