The EMB-CAR through the Ambient Monitoring Section marked its first ever Regional Water Quality Management Area (WQMA) Summit in celebration of World Water Day with its tagline, “Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible” on March 22, 2022 at New Town Plaza Hotel, Baguio City. The event seeks to give spotlight to those individuals and other institutions who work behind the bureau’s unending pursuit of protecting, preserving and reviving the quality of fresh, brackish and marine water in accordance with RA 9275 known as The Philippine Clean Water Act 2004.

EMB-CAR Regional Director Ma. Victoria V. Abrera acknowledged the presence of WQMA Governing Board and stakeholders from the different National Government Offices and Local Government Units in the region as she accented their efforts in attaining the WQMA’s objective of protecting the water body and its tributaries by keeping their water quality within the criteria conforming to the waterbody’s classification.

She further stressed that for almost three-decade commemoration of the World Water Day, access to clean water remains a challenge with the increasing population, climate change and the ongoing global pandemic. She asserted that we should not be complacent based on better results of monitoring data as it may lull us into false sense of security.  “We need to continue our efforts to protect our rivers.  Let’s not wait for the last drop of water to waste before we realized its worth”, she concluded.

Meanwhile, DENR- CAR Regional Executive Director Engr. Ralph C. Pablo delivered the keynote message of DENR Undersecretary Atty. Juan Miguel Cuna extending his commendation to NGOs, LGUs, and stakeholders. He further hopes that everyone may continue to sustain ground water resources of Cordillera which is dubbed as the water cradle of the North.

During the summit, RD Abrera and RED Pablo accorded the exemplary awards to the Local Government Units, National government Agencies, Non-government organizations, and the Academe for their continuing effort and active participation in sustaining and rehabilitating the water areas.

The program was followed with the presentation of DENR-CAR personnel, Gladys Palberas on Cordillera River Rehabilitation Program, DILG-CAR personnel Ivan Ley Dalay also discussed the Policy and Guidelines on Sewage Treatment and Sewage Management System, and DPWH-CAR personnel Vilma Talamayan  presented the National Sewerage and Septage Management Program.
