EMB CAR joins the Kapihan sa Kalikasan together with the DENR CAR, line bureaus, PENRO Benguet and CENRO Baguio. The said Kapihan was facilitated by the Philippine Information Agency – CAR in partnership with the DENR Cordillera Administrative Region to tackle updates on environmental issues and concerns and to jumpstart the month-long activities of the environment month and the 35th anniversary of the DENR in June on May 25, 2022 at the DENR-CAR Conference Room, Baguio City.
DENR-CAR Regional Executive Director Engr. Ralph C. Pablo gave updates on the upcoming activities for the month of June in celebration of Environment Month and the 35th DENR Anniversary. Activities lined up are the following: selection of the biggest tree, synchronized tree planting, river and watershed clean-up drive, consultation of the health status of the Philippine Eagle in Apayao, recognition of Environmental partners, Best Employee, Best Office, and Loyalty awards.
During the conference, DENR announced that Mount Pulag National Park located at Bokod, Kabayan, Benguet and Banao Landscape in Balbalan, Kalinga were finally declared as Legislated Protected Areas. Likewise, the implementation of Program on Awards and Incentives for Service Excellence (PRAISE) activities was intensified to empower employees and improve office performance. The Anti-Sexual Harassment and Safe Spaces Act is also observed and strengthened to prevent hostile working environment.
Meanwhile, EMB- CAR Regional Director Ma. Victoria V. Abrera informed the public on the ceremonial turnover of department memo circular on the reclassification of Balili River to Baguio City and LGUs Sablan and La Trinidad on May 12, 2022 with the DENR Undersecretary for Field Operations for Luzon, Visayas and Environment, Atty. Juan Miguel T. Cuna.
For Air Quality Management, RD Abrera emphasized the signing of Memorandum of Agreement with private partners from Camp John Hay Management Corporation and Philex Mining Corporation on the Continuous Adopt- an-Ambient- Air -Quality -Monitoring- Station (“CAAQMS”) Program. EMB has been appealing to other private companies to tie up with the bureau to expand the network for the monitoring of our air quality”, RD Abrera said.
For Solid Waste Management, RD Abrera presented the transformation of the Irisan Dumpsite to an Eco-Park under the management of the CEPMO-Baguio City through Honorable Mayor Benjamin Magalong.
More on waste management, the establishment of Engineered Sanitary Landfill is a requirement of LGUs in the proper disposal and containment of solid wastes. “We have nine (9) operating SLF and six (6) ongoing constructions of SLF among the 77 LGUs. Sites undergo identification criteria and screening guidelines under National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) Resolution No.64, series of 2013, such as Proximity of Groundwater Resources, Local Geographical Conditions, Proximity to Residential Areas and Other Sensitive Land Users, and others”, RD Abrera emphasized.
